German Workers' Party (DAP)
A party founded by Anton Drexler in Munich in January 1919, which Hitler joined in September 1919.
NSDAP
The name given to the DAP in February 1920 after it was renamed; it released the 25 Point Programme.
25 Point Programme
The Nazi party platform released in February 1920 that was anti-Semitic, anti-Versailles, and anti-democratic.
SA
A group set up by Hitler in 1921 to protect meetings and attack opponents, giving the party a sense of discipline and violence.
Munich Putsch
An attempt by Hitler and the Nazis to overthrow the Weimar government on 8-9 November 1923, - took over a beer hall, matched through Munich, 16 nazis killed
Landsberg Prison
The prison where Hitler served 9 months of a 5-year sentence and wrote Mein Kampf.
Mein Kampf
The book written by Hitler in prison and published in 1925.
SS (Schutzstaffel)
An elite loyal bodyguard unit established in 1925.

Groups first set up in 1926 to indoctrinate young boys.
Joseph Goebbels
The Nazi official who perfected propaganda through posters, rallies, and newspapers.
Gaue
The 35 regions into which Germany was divided during Nazi reorganisation.
Gauleiter
A Nazi Party leader responsible for a single region (gau), such as Goebbels and Strasser.
Bamberg Conference
A 1926 conference that brought party policies in line with Hitler's beliefs in Mein Kampf and allowed him to reorganise the party.
Wall Street Crash
The October 1929 event that caused the Great Depression and led the U.S. to recall loans from Germany.
Arbeit und Brot
A Nazi slogan meaning "Work and Bread" used to offer simple answers during the depression.
July 1932 Election
The election where Nazis won 230 seats and became the largest party in the Reichstag.
Hindenburg
The President who was persuaded by von Papen to appoint Hitler as Chancellor on 30 January 1933.
30 January 1933
The date Hitler was appointed as Chancellor by Hindenburg.
Von Papen
The politician who persuaded Hindenburg to make Hitler chancellor and himself vice-chancellor, thinking they could "box him in."
