Solid
A state of matter that maintains a fixed size and shape.
Liquid

Gas
A state of matter that neither maintains a fixed size nor shape, expanding to fill its container.
Volume
The amount of space an object occupies, which remains constant for liquids.
Shape
The external form or appearance of an object, which can change for liquids and gases.
Historical categories of matter
Traditional classifications of matter into solid, liquid, and gas.
Other states of matter
States like plasma and liquid crystals, which do not neatly fit into the traditional categories.
Liquid crystal
A state of matter that has properties between those of liquid and solid.
Plasma
A state of matter consisting of ionized gas, with free-moving ions and electrons.
