Rhyme
This is a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words.
Form
A set of rules that dictate the rhyme scheme, structure, rhythm, and meter of a poem.
Tone
Also referred to as the mode of the poem.
Theme
The central idea, message, or underlying meaning of the poem.
Point of View
The perspective or point of view from which the poem is written.
Stanza
A grouped set of lines within a poem, often separated by spaces, which can function similarly to paragraphs in prose.
Figurative Language
A literary device which can be used to add depth and broaden the meaning of poetry.
Sound Devices
Techniques that enhance the auditory quality of a poem (including rhyme, alliteration, assonance, consonance, and onomatopoeia).
Figurative language
The use of words to convey meaning beyond their usual or literal understanding.
Symbolism
The use of objects, characters, or colors—that represent abstract ideas or concepts within the poem.
