progressive vs regressive taxes

Progressive Tax

◦ More taxes on larger amounts of money

◦ Ex: If you make $10,000, you might be taxed 10%; if you make $25,000, you would be taxed 12%

◦ Income tax is progressive

Regressive Tax

◦ Flat rate

◦ The more money you make, the less money goes to taxes

◦ Sales, payroll, & property taxes are regressive

◦ Women are hurt by regressive taxing because they’re paid less than men are, so more of their income goes to taxes
