Stelsin
A statement sentence that tells us something (e.g., Ek speel sokker).
Vraagsin
A question sentence that asks a question (e.g., Speel jy sokker?).
Bevelsin
A command sentence that gives an instruction (e.g., Maak die deur toe).
Uitroepsin
An exclamation sentence that shows strong feelings (e.g., Wat 'n mooi dag!).
Selfstandige Naamwoord
A noun that names a person, place, animal, or thing.
Voornaamwoord
A pronoun that takes the place of a noun.
Werkwoord
A verb that shows action.
Byvoeglike Naamwoord
An adjective that describes a noun.
Bywoord
An adverb that describes a verb.
Voegwoord
A conjunction that joins words or sentences together.
Voorsetsel
A preposition that shows position.
Voorvoegsel
A prefix added to the beginning of a word, such as on-, her-, or ge-.
Agtervoegsel
A suffix added to the end of a word, such as -lik, -loos, or -heid.
Meervoude
Plurals; common endings include -e, -te, and -ers.
Skryftekens
Punctuation marks used to structure writing, such as the full stop, comma, and colon.
Deelteken
A diaeresis (¨) consisting of two dots above a vowel to show that vowels are pronounced separately.
Klankgrepe
Syllables; the smaller sound parts into which a word can be divided.
Indirekte Rede
Indirect speech, where quotation marks are removed and 'dat' is used to report what someone said.
Homonieme
Homonyms; words that are spelled the same but have different meanings.
Bly
A homonym meaning either 'happy' or 'live/stay'.
Ryk
A homonym meaning either 'wealthy' or 'kingdom/realm'.
Lig
A homonym meaning either 'light' (illumination) or 'not heavy'.
Sy
A homonym meaning either 'his' or 'silk'.
Keer
A homonym meaning either 'time/occasion' or 'stop/prevent'.
Sinonieme
Synonyms; words that have the same or nearly the same meaning (e.g., Bang and Bevrees).
Antonieme
Antonyms; words that have opposite meanings (e.g., Laat and Vroeg).
