Tissues
Specialized groups of cells that perform functions beyond the abilities of individual cells.
Histology
The study of tissues.
Four types of tissues
The 4 categories of tissues found in the body: Epithelial, Connective, Nervous, and Muscle.
Epithelial tissue
A type of tissue that lines every body surface, is avascular, and highly innervated.
Avascular
A characteristic of epithelial tissue meaning it is not penetrated by blood vessels.
Innervated
A term describing tissue that contains many nerve endings.
Basement membrane
An adhesive-like structure that binds epithelial tissue to the body.
Diffusion
The process by which epithelial tissues receive nutrients from the tissues they are attached to.
Endocrine and exocrine glands
Specialized glands through which epithelial tissues perform secretions.
Simple
Epithelial tissue consisting of one (1) cell layer.
Stratified
Epithelial tissue consisting of multiple cell layers.
Squamous
An epithelial cell shape that is flat.
Cuboidal
An epithelial cell shape that is a cube.
Columnar
An epithelial cell shape that is tall and thin.
