What happened to 18th century criminals?
Sometimes they were transported overseas as an alternative to being hung or flogged. America was the chosen destination until independence. Prison hulks were used.
What happened in 1787?
Government decided to turn Botany Bay into a huge prison-distance could deter criminals. 1400 convicts sailed to Australia on board 11 ships
What happened in 1788?
The crew and convicts landed in what is now Sydney
What happened in the first year of the colony?
There was a lack of skilled farmers, poor soils and unfamiliar soils which meant food was scarce. Phillip ordered food to be shared equally between convicts and free settlers.
What did convicts do?
They felled trees, grew food, quarried stone and built new buildings. Road gangs were used for difficult convicts where they worked with their legs in chains
What happened in the 1820s?
The hard work had paid off and Sydney was now thriving as a settlement
Describe the aboriginals?
The aboriginal Australian people where habiting Australia for 65000 years. They lived in hundreds of different tribes with their own languages and they roamed over the territory where its ancestors had lived. They all shared a similar culture and set of beliefs
