Child Passenger Protection Act 27-34-104
Children under six years old and less than sixty pounds must be in a properly secured child safety seat in a vehicle. All children under fifteen must wear safety restraints while the vehicle is moving.
Secondhand Smoke Act
Prohibits smoking in a motor vehicle with a child under fourteen years old. First offenders may face a fine up to $1,000 and community service, subsequent convictions can lead to fines up to $2,000 and more community service.
Illegal Use of Special Certificate
Using another person's special certificate is fraud and can result in a Class A misdemeanor. First offense:$100-$500 fine. Second offense:$250-$1,000 fine, 6-month license suspension, and additional fees.
Emergency Vehicle Protocol
When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and sirens, pull over to the right edge of the road. Violating this law can result in a $1,000 fine and up to a 6-month license suspension.
School Bus Stop Sign
Vehicles must stop if the median is less than 20 ft. School buses are required to stop at railroad crossings.
Work Zone Violations
Fines for moving traffic violations in highway work zones double if workers are present and warning signs are displayed. Failure to yield can lead to a $1,000 fine and a 180-day license suspension.
Traffic Signal Meanings
Flashing red light means stop, proceed when safe. Flashing yellow light means yield and proceed with caution. Red arrow prohibits turning in that direction. Yellow arrow indicates the light will soon turn red. Green arrow allows turning if safe, opposing traffic must stop.
