Chimú Laberintos de un Traje Sagrado

One of the basic functions of ritual clothing was to serve as a visual emblem or insignia of the individual’s membership in a certain group. Brilliant, colorful, and highly significant designs gave the observer an immediate idea as to the ethnic identity and other social and political characteristics of members of the society. This Chimú costume is an excellent example of this symbolic function of ceremonial dress, since the entire ceremonial costume is covered with symbols that allude to features of Chimú ideology

Human sacrifice was an important part of Mayan rituals and ideology. The most common depiction in the art and inscriptions of that culture is ritual sacrifice by decapitation, described as an act of “creation.” The sacrifice of prisoners reenacted the complex of myths that allowed for the establishment of a cosmic order and was central to the ideology of the Mayan principalities.

Sincretismo was possible because painting served as a shared communicative structure between different cultural groups. Images created a common symbolic language through which Indigenous and European traditions could interact. Arte colonial andina served as vehicles for communication with the sacred, rather than simply symbols or illustrations. The paintings centered hierophantic symbols which are images that reveal or manifest the sacred. Ejemplo: la Virgen-Cerro como sincretismo de María con Pachamama. The syncretism of Andean painting is more than just a fusion of indigenous and European traditions - it's an entirely new production that serves as a medium of communication
