What are traits of Elizabethan portraiture?
-Used as representations of a curated image of oneself, to propel status
-Used symbolic imagery, not aiming to imitate but to interpret and project ideals
-Was utilised throughout Elizabeth’s court, portraiture affirmed relationships, diplomatic and personal.
What is the cult of gloriana? (3)
-A propaganda displaying Elizabeth as an idolised figure that embodied all religious and feminine ideals.
-Depicted her as akin to mythological heros
-As triumphing over any preceding beliefs as the ultimate example of Protestant Christian ideals, as the Virgin Queen.
Why did Elizabeth need a curated image? (4)
-Female, women were seen as weaker, her sisters reign had not been successful
-Unmarried, and no heirs, but this meant SHE had the power
-Aging, weak and feeble, no heirs
-To create a branding of the Queen as untouchable, ethereal, and above all of these stereotypes and expectations.
