connective tissue (CT)
the most abundant tissue type; cells are packed loosely to allow for movement
adipose CT
provides fat storage and insulation
dense regular CT
provides strength, densely packed together containing collagen fibers; makes up the tendons and ligaments
dense irregular CT
the dermis of the skin, is less dense than its regular version, contains collagen fibers
bone CT
osteocytes, provide support; located in the skeleton
blood
transport substances, have many types (RBC, WBC, platelets, etc.); located in the heart and blood vessels
elastic cartilage
provide strength and shape, contain lacunae
fibrocartilage
allows strength and resists compression between bones
hyaline cartilage
provides flexible support
smooth muscle tissue
involved in involuntary control mechanisms; lines hollow organs
cardiac muscle tissue
striated and involuntary with a disk-like appearance; lines the heart
skeletal muscle tissue
striated and controls voluntary mechanisms; attached to the skeleton
nervous tissue
sends signals throughout the body that controls and coordinates body movements; found in the brain and spinal cord
loose areolar CT
provides support for the epithelial layers, cushions the organs; found beneath epithelial tissues
