Speech Sound Disorder (SSD)
A type of speech disorder that is characterized by difficulties with producing sounds correctly; not caused by injury or dialect.
Speech Delay (SD)
A speech disorder involving a delay in the development of speech skills.
Motor Speech Disorder (MSD)
A type of speech disorder that affects the planning, programming, and execution of speech.
Apraxia
A motor speech disorder where individuals have difficulty with the movement required for speech.
Dysarthria
A motor speech disorder resulting from neurological injury; characterized by weak or incomplete speech production.
Phonatory
Related to the production of vocal sounds or voice.
Articulatory
Involving the physical production of particular speech sounds.
Sonorants
Sounds produced with an open airflow, including vowels, nasals, liquids, and glides.
Obstruents
Sounds produced with obstructed airflow, including stops, fricatives, and affricates.
Monophthong
A single vowel sound that does not change in quality during its duration.
Diphthong
A complex vowel sound that begins with one vowel sound and glides into another within the same syllable.
IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)
A system of phonetic notation used to represent the specific sounds of languages.
Phonetic Transcription
Represents exact sounds produced in speech using square brackets, indicating how a sound is produced.
Phonemic Transcription
Represents the mental categories or underlying sound using slashes, regardless of variations in articulation.
Voiced Sounds
Sounds produced with vibration of the vocal cords.
Voiceless Sounds
Sounds produced without vibration of the vocal cords.
Respiration
The process involving inhalation and exhalation of air that provides power for speech production.
Velopharyngeal Closure
The closure of the velopharyngeal port, which affects resonance in speech.
Articulators
Parts of the vocal tract involved in the production of speech sounds, including the tongue, lips, and palate.
