Imperialism
When a stronger country takes over a weaker one for its natural resources and their markets.
Sphere of Influence
Territory or area that a country controls and "protects."
Germany & Italy
Two new countries in Europe in the mid to late 1800s that grew quickly.
-Were previously made up of many different states (nations)
-Their leaders were called monarchs
-They will both become their own unified nations in the later 1800s
Mexican Revolution
Refers to the Civil war in Mexico where Wilson failed to capture Pancho Villa.
-Change in the Mexican government from 1910 to 1920.
-One side was pro-America, the other was anti-American
-Pancho was anti-American
Seward's Folly
The nickname was given to the Purchase of Alaska in 1867. The purchase was made by Secretary of State, William H. Seward, and he purchased the land from Russia for two cents an acre.
Jose Marti
Cuban Revolutionary (and poet) who brought international attention to the Cuban Civil War
Yellow Journalism
When the media makes up exaggerated stories to sell papers.
-Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst were the two famous publishers at the time who took advantage of the Cuban civil war
-They used Marti's accounts and exaggerated them
De lome Letter
A letter written by Senor Don Enrique Dupuy (the Spanish ambassador to the U.S.) that said McKinley was weak. McKinley responds by sending warships to "moniter" the coast of Cuba inland.
USS Maine
An armored cruiser (battleship) commissioned into the U.S. Navy in 1895. It was sent to Havana Habor in Cuba to protect American interests in the Cuban Independence movement against Spain. Sunk in Havana harbor causing America's involvement in SPAM (Spam begins).
George Dewey
Admiral of the U.S. Navy during SPAM, who destroyed Spanish fleet at Manila, Philippines. The battle takes place mostly in the spanish colonies to prevent large scale war in other nations.
Rough Riders
The name given to the First U.S. Volunteer cavalry regiment, led under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt (he gains national reputation).
Treaty of Paris, 1898
Treaty that ends the Spanish-American war and gave America possession of Cuba, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam for $20 million (YOU MUST KNOW THE DATE ALSO)
Platt Amendment
A treaty between the U.S. and Cuba that attempted to protect Cuba's independence from foreign intervention. It allowed the U.S. to get involved in Cuba's domestic affairs in order to enforce the Cuban revolution.
Insular Cases
Series of Supreme court cases that asks the question "Does the Constitution follow the flag?"
-Does taken territory also get constitutional rights
-The court will say the constitution does not follow the flag, but, natives do get some basic human rights
Common Wealth
Country owned by another nation, but gets limited independence.
ex. Cuba
Protectorate
A country that is completely dominated by another country

Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines
Open Door Policy
US foreign policy to allow free trade in China.
Boxer Rebellion
Revolt by Chinese peasants against European Rule. It failed, and Europe allowed the open door
Roosevelt Corollary
Added to the Monroe Doctrine, U.S. reserves the right to intervene in any western hemisphere nation that is not handling its business.
Dollar Diplomacy
When the U.S. uses money to make friends and the military to back it up. (TAFT)
Hawaii
Pacific island taken by the U.S. for its sugar (McKinley). The best example of the application of Dollar diplomacy.
Panama Canal
Waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, vital for American commerce and security.
Treaty o' Portsmouth
Treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War; TR won the Nobel peace prize
White Man's Burden
Poem by Rudyard Kipling that said the U.S. had an obligation to bring "civilization" to natives
