Hematopoiesis
The process of blood cell production occurring primarily in bone marrow.
Red Marrow
Type of bone marrow actively involved in the formation of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Yellow Marrow
Type of bone marrow primarily composed of adipose (fat) cells, hematopoietically inactive under normal conditions.
Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs)
Pluripotent cells capable of differentiating into all blood cell lineages.
Stromal Cells
Cells providing a unique structural and chemical environment for hematopoietic cell development.
Marrow Sinusoids
Wide, thin-walled vessels that facilitate the passage of mature blood cells into circulation.
Extramedullary Hematopoiesis
Formation of blood cells outside the bone marrow, occurring in organs like the liver and spleen under certain conditions.
Aplastic Anemia
A condition where the bone marrow becomes hypocellular due to fatty replacement, resulting in inadequate blood cell production.
Haemopoietic Inductive Microenvironment
Spaces between marrow sinuses that support hematopoietic cell function and development.
Marrow Biopsy
Procedure performed to assess cellularity and morphology in the bone marrow, useful for diagnosing blood disorders.
