Sensory Memory
Very brief memory type (< 1 sec) that filters incoming information.
Working Memory
Active processing memory type that can hold approximately 7 items, used for tasks like recalling a phone number.
Episodic Memory
Long-term memory for personal events and experiences.
Semantic Memory
Long-term memory for general facts and concepts, such as the function of mitochondria.
Procedural Memory
Long-term memory for skills and how-to knowledge, e.g., riding a bike.
Schemas
Organized mental frameworks that help in interpreting new information.
Metacognition
The process of thinking about one's own thinking.
Self-regulatory Metacognition
A type of metacognition where a student notices confusion and decides to re-read difficult sections.
Self-directed Learning
The highest form of learning where individuals take control of their own learning process.
