Lithosphere
The rigid, outermost shell on Earth, composed of hard, brittle rock including part of the crust and upper mantle.
Mohorovicic Discontinuity
The boundary between the crust and the mantle, discovered by Andrija Mohorovicic in 1909.
Asthenosphere
The part of the mantle beneath the lithosphere, made of molten rock and metal, responsible for plate movements.
Core
The innermost layer of the Earth, divided into outer and inner layers, consisting of very hot metals.
Earthquake
A sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust creating seismic waves, with a focus (hypocenter) and an epicenter.
Fault line
The surface trace of a fault, the line of intersection between the Earth's surface.
Richter Scale
A scale invented by Charles Richter to measure the intensity and strength of earthquakes based on energy released.
Seismology
The scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of elastic waves through the Earth.
Seismometers
Instruments measuring ground motions, seismic waves, and other seismic sources, deployed in various locations.
Triangulation Method
A seismological method using three seismic stations to determine the location of an earthquake epicenter.
