Disposable gloves

Must be worn when handling bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, and urine.

Biohazard bins

Used for disposing of disposable gloves; needles must go in the sharps bin.

Lab hygiene

Involves washing hands, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and disinfecting surfaces and equipment.

Informed consent

Participants must complete this form and undergo health screening before starting experiments.

HR monitor

A device fitted to the participant to check and display their heart rate.

Douglas bag

A bag used for collecting expired air samples in experiments.

Breathing frequency measured in breaths per minute.

Servomex gas analyser

An instrument used to analyse the composition of expired air samples.

V_T

Volume of one single breath, calculated from expired gas volume (V_E) divided by breathing frequency (fB).

Submaximal testing

A method of exercise testing where the participant cycles continuously at a constant cadence with progressively increased load.

Haldane transformation

A method that assumes inspired nitrogen equals expired nitrogen, allowing the calculation of inspired ventilation and accurate determination of oxygen consumption.

Ambient conditions correction

Gas volumes must be corrected for ambient temperature and pressure to standardize data for accurate comparisons.
