What is an ion?
A charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses electrons to achieve a full outer shell.
Which groups are most likely to form ions?
Groups 1, 2, 6, and 7 because they require the least energy to reach a full outer shell.
Does a Group 1 element become positive or negative?
Positive (1+), because it loses one negatively charged electron.
If an atom gains electrons, where do you write the 'electron' in the chemical equation?
On the left side, with the atom.
Why don't elements in Group 4 usually form ions?
Because gaining or losing four electrons requires too much energy to be stable.
