Soporte Vital Básico (SVB)
A systematic response organized into a Chain of Survival, based on recent research, to provide essential care until advanced medical treatment is available.
Chain of Survival (Adult)
The series of steps for cardiac events: recognize symptoms/activate emergency services, immediate CPR, rapid defibrillation with an AED, advanced life support, post-cardiac arrest care, and recovery.
Recovery (Recuperación)
The sixth link added to the 2020 Chain of Survival for both pediatric and adult patients to address physical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs.
Compression Rate
The required frequency of compressions for all age groups is 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
Adult Chest Compression Depth
Compressions should be at least 2 to 2.4 inches (5 to 6cm) deep.
Carotid Pulse
The pulse point located on the side of the neck used for checking circulation in adults.
Jaw-Thrust Maneuver
The preferred technique for opening the airway if a neck injury is suspected.
Adult Compression-to-Ventilation Ratio
The standard ratio for adults is 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths (30:2).
Ventricular Fibrillation
Common cause of cardiac arrest involving disorganized electrical activity in the heart chambers, treated with an electrical shock from an AED.
AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
A device that recognizes ventricular fibrillation and other dysrhythmias and delivers a shock to restore normal heart rhythm.
AED Pad Placement (Adult)
One pad on the upper right chest and the second pad on the lower left chest below the armpit.
Child (SVB age definition)
A person aged from 1 year old until the onset of puberty.
Infant (SVB age definition)
A person aged between 0 and 12 months.
Brachial Pulse
The pulse point on the inside of the upper arm between the elbow and shoulder, used to check circulation in infants.
Infant Chest Compression Depth
One-third of the chest depth, which is approximately 1.5 inches (4cm).
Pediatric Compression-to-Ventilation Ratio (2 Rescuers)
A ratio of 15 compressions to 2 breaths (15:2) is used for children and infants when two rescuers are present.
Advanced Airway
A stable method for providing breaths (such as an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask) that allows for one breath every 6 seconds in adults without pausing compressions.
Rescue Breathing (Adult)
Providing one breath every 6 seconds, resulting in 10 to 12 breaths per minute.
Heimlich Maneuver (Abdominal Thrusts)
The technique used to clear severe airway obstructions in responsive individuals who are older than 1 year.
Back Blows and Chest Thrusts
The technique used to relieve choking in infants under 1 year of age, consisting of 5 blows and 5 thrusts.
MediCode
An application that provides quick access to algorithms for SVB, ACLS (AVCA), PALS (SVAP), and CPR/AED.
CertAlert+
A tool used to track, store, and receive reminders for medical licensing and certification expiration dates.
