Brazilian bikini waxing
A waxing technique that requires the removal of all the hair from the front and the back of the bikini area.
depilatory
A substance, usually a caustic alkali preparation, used for the temporary removal of superfluous hair by dissolving it at the skin surface.
electrolysis
The removal of hair by means of an electric current that destroys the hair's growth cell.
epilator
A substance used to remove hair by pulling from the follicle's base.
intense pulsed light
Also known as photoepilation and IPL; a permanent hair reduction method that uses intense light to destroy the growth cells of the hair follicles.
laser hair removal
A permanent hair reduction treatment in which a laser beam is pulsed on the skin, impairing the hair growth.
sugaring
A temporary hair removal method that involves the use of a thick, warm sugar-based paste.
threading
Also known as banding; temporary hair removal method that involves twisting and rolling cotton thread along the surface of the skin, entwining the hair in the thread and lifting it from the follicle.
tweezing
A hair removal method that involves pulling one hair at a time out by the root using tweezers.
alipidic
literally means 'lack of lipids'; describes skin that does not produce enough sebum, indicated by absence of visible pores.
alginate
seaweed-based mask applied after a serum or treatment cream; they come in powder form and are mixed with water or serums, and they dry to form a rubberized texture.
ampoules
individual doses of serum, sealed in small vials.
aromatherapy
the therapeutic use of plant aromas for beauty and health treatment.
chemical exfoliant
product containing chemicals that either loosen or dissolve dead cell buildup.
clay-based masks
oil-absorbing cleansing masks that have an exfoliating effect and an astringent effect on oily and combination skin, making pores temporarily appear smaller.
cleansing milk
nonfoaming lotion cleansers designed to cleanse dry and sensitive skin types and remove makeup.
comedo
mass of hardened sebum and skin cells in a hair follicle; can be open (blackhead) or closed (whitehead).
contraindication
condition that requires avoiding certain treatments, procedures, or products to prevent undesirable side effects.
cream masks
masks often containing oils and emollients as well as humectants; have a strong moisturizing effect.
electrotherapy
the use of electrical currents to treat the skin.
emollients
oil or fatty ingredients that prevent moisture from leaving the skin.
enzymes
also known as keratolytic enzymes or protein-dissolving agents; a type of chemical exfoliant that works by dissolving keratin protein in the surface cells of the skin.
exfoliants
products that help bring about exfoliation.
exfoliation
the removal of excess dead cells from the skin surface.
extraction
a procedure in which comedones are removed from the follicles by manual manipulation.
facial
also known as a facial treatment; a professional skin treatment that improves the condition and appearance of the skin.
facial steamer
a facial machine that heats and produces a stream of warm steam that can be focused on the client's face or other areas of skin.
friction
invigorating rubbing movement requiring pressure on the skin with the fingers or palms while moving them over an underlying structure.
gommages
also known as roll-off masks; peeling creams that are rubbed off the skin.
humectants
also known as hydrators or water-binding agents; ingredients that attract water.
magnifying lamps
lamps with a magnifying lens surrounded by a circular light, providing a well-lit, enlarged view of the skin.
masks
also known as masques; concentrated treatments applied to the skin composed of mineral clays, moisturizing agents, skin softeners, aromatherapy oils, botanical extracts, and other beneficial ingredients to cleanse, exfoliate, tighten, tone, hydrate, and nourish the skin.
massage
manual or mechanical manipulation of the body by rubbing, kneading, tapping, and other movements to increase metabolism and circulation, promote absorption, and relieve pain.
massage products
lubricants used to make the skin slippery during massage.
mechanical exfoliants
methods used to physically remove dead cell buildup.
microdermabrasion
mechanical exfoliation that involves shooting aluminum oxide or other crystals at the skin with a hand-held device that exfoliates dead cells.
moisturizers
products that help increase the moisture content of the skin surface.
motor point
point on the skin over the muscle where pressure or stimulation will cause contraction of that muscle.
paraffin wax masks
specially prepared facial masks containing paraffin and other beneficial ingredients; typically used with treatment cream.
petrissage
kneading movement performed by lifting, squeezing, and pressing the tissue with light, firm pressure.
rotary brush
also known as a facial brush or brushing machine; a rotating electrical appliance with interchangeable brushes that can be attached to the rotating head.
serums
concentrated products that generally contain higher concentrations of ingredients designed to penetrate and treat various skin conditions.
tapotement
also known as percussion; movements in which the fingertips strike the skin in rapid succession or fast tapping movements.
treatment cream
a specialty product designed to facilitate change in the skin's appearance.

also known as pancake makeup; a heavy-coverage makeup pressed into a compact and applied to the face with a moistened cosmetic sponge.

thick, heavy types of foundation used to hide dark circles under the eyes, dark splotches, and other imperfections.
contour
application technique that creates a shadow over an area, minimizing features.
cool colors
colors that suggest coolness; dominated by blues, greens, violets, and blue-reds.
eyebrow pencils
pencils used to add color and shape to the eyebrows.
eyebrow powders
powders used to add color and shape to the eyebrows.
eyelash adhesive
product used to make artificial eyelashes adhere, or stick, to the natural lash line.
eyeliner
cosmetic used to outline and emphasize the eyes.
eye makeup removers
special preparations for removing eye makeup.
eyeshadows
cosmetics applied on the eyelids to accentuate or contour.
eye tabbing
sometimes used to describe the process of applying groups of individual eyelashes along the lash line.
face powder
cosmetic powder, sometimes tinted, that is used to add a matte or nonskin finish to the face.
ferrule
metal part of a brush that attaches the glued bristles to the handle and adds a certain amount of strength to the bristles.
foundation
also known as base makeup; a tinted cosmetic used to cover or even out the coloring of the skin.
greasepaint
heavy makeup used for theatrical purposes.
highlight
application technique that draws light to an area, emphasizing features.
individual lashes
separate artificial eyelashes that are applied to the base of the eyelashes one at a time.
lip color
also known as lipstick or lip gloss; a pastelike cosmetic used to change or enhance the lip color.
lip liner
colored pencil used to outline the lips and to help keep lip color from bleeding into small lines around the mouth.
mascara
cosmetic preparation used to darken, define, and thicken the eyelashes.
matte
nonshiny, dull.
neutral colors
colors that do not complement or contrast with any other color.
noncomedogenic
does not contain ingredients that clog the follicles and aggravate acne-prone skin.
primer
applied to the skin before foundation to help disguise skin imperfections and discoloration.
skin tone
depth of color of the skin's surface.
strip lashes
eyelash hairs attached to a band that is applied with adhesive to the natural lash line.
tabs
small clusters of three or four artificial eyelashes on one point of attachment.
undertone
color underneath the surface of the skin; undertones can be warm (yellow, peachy, golden), neutral (mix of warm and cool), or cool (pink, red or blue).
warm colors
range of colors from yellow and gold through oranges, red-oranges, most reds, and even some yellow-greens.
