Ionic charge prediction

Electrons in outer shell try and get to stable octet

Therefore G1 G2 and G3 loose electrons (corresponding charges)

G5 G6 and G7 gain electrons (corresponding charges)

Ionic formulae

  • Nitrate = NO₃⁻

  • Carbonate = CO₃²⁻

  • Sulfate = SO₄²⁻

  • Hydroxide = OH⁻

  • Ammonium = NH₄⁺

  • Zinc = Zn²⁺

  • Silver = Ag⁺

Ionic equations

  1. Write the balanced symbol equation

  2. Split aqueous (aq) ionic compounds into ions

  3. Do not split solids (s), liquids (l), gases (g), or water (H₂O)

  4. Cancel ions that appear unchanged on both sides

  5. Write remaining ions as the net ionic equation

Spectator ions = ions that do not take part in the reaction and remain unchanged.

Chemical equations

  1. Write correct formulae of reactants and products

  2. Add state symbols: (s), (l), (g), (aq)

  3. Balance using numbers in front only (not changing formulae)
