Culture
The shared history, values, languages, practices, and expectations of a cultural group, which covers a range of behaviors and ideas common to all members and is dynamic in nature.
Cultural competency
The ability to interact effectively with people of different cultural backgrounds by overcoming blocks such as prejudice, fear, and stereotyping.
CaLD
An acronym for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse populations, which are rapidly increasing in the Australian ageing population.
Italian
The highest demographic represented within the culturally and linguistically diverse ageing population in Australia.
Cultural Perception of Dementia (Vietnam)
Commonly considered as someone who has 'lost their mind,' a view that can negatively impact the ability to secure a timely diagnosis.
Collectivist vs Individualistic
Differing cultural orientations that affect principles of autonomy, language barriers, and the expression of pain, particularly in palliative care.
Ethno-specific services
Agencies providing culturally tailored care, such as Chung Wah Association, Cura In-home care, Rainbow aged care services, Umbrella multicultural services, and Italian Aged Care.
Communication cards
Tools that depict daily activities and situations used to prompt discussion, assist with directions, and clarify the needs of clients with language barriers.
Strengths-based approach
A clinical method involving respectful listening, building genuine relationships, and applying a human-rights based approach to care.
Decolonising OT
An approach that counters negative stereotypes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, brings Indigenous knowledges to the fore, and reduces historical exclusion.
Aboriginal Australia Diversity
Comprised of approximately 300 groups, each with its own country, stories, languages or dialects, and traditions.
Sorry business
A term used by Aboriginal people to refer to the death of a family or community member and the specific grieving process involved.
Uncle and Auntie
Terms of respect used within the Aboriginal community to address someone who is older or highly regarded.

A physiological change during menopause in older women that can lead to physical discomfort and reduced libido.
Barriers to sexual health
Factors including cultural or religious beliefs, social stigma, ageism, and non-informed health professionals that limit discussions on intimacy in older adults.
Trauma-informed key points (Sexuality)
Clinical strategies including offering choice and control, normalizing sexuality as part of health, and giving permission without assuming interest.
Rainbow flag
A symbol used in clinical settings to display an inclusive environment and demonstrate safety for LGBTQI+ individuals.
Inclusive communication
The use of gender-neutral and non-discriminatory language, avoiding assumptions, and referring to a person in the manner they wish to be addressed.
