Cardiac Output (CO) Formula
The calculation defined as CO=HR×SV (Heart Rate multiplied by Stroke Volume).
RA (Right Atrium) / CVP (Central Venous Pressure)
Measurements that represent RV (Right Ventricular) Preload.
PVR (Pulmonary Vascular Resistance)
Measurement representing RV (Right Ventricular) Afterload.
PAOP (Pulmonary Artery Occlusion Pressure)
Preferred term for LVEDP (Left Ventricular End Diastolic Pressure), also known as PCWP (Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure).
PAd (Pulmonary Artery Diastolic Pressure)
A measurement used as a Preload Surrogate.
SVR (Systemic Vascular Resistance)
Measurement representing Afterload for the Left Ventricle, also associated with blood pressure from an Arterial line or cuff.
Phlebostatic Axis
The anatomical reference point where all transducers must be kept.
Pressure Bag Setup
Utilizes 500,mL of NS (Normal Saline) and is maintained at a pressure of −300,mmHg.
PA Distal Port
Monitors Pulmonary Artery pressures and is used to draw SvO2; do NOT use for meds, though intermittent meds are OK at a rate of 1,mL over 1,min.
VIP/AUXILLARY Port
The port on the Swan Ganz catheter used specifically for medications (CVC).
RA PROXIMAL (CVP) Port
Port used for monitoring CVP and is considered OK for medications in a pinch.
Thermistor
A component that measures the temperature of injectate (Δ of injectate temp) for Cardiac Output (CO) calculations.
Balloon Line
The component used for wedging (PAOP); the syringe must be kept deflated when not in use.
Rule of Nines: Head and Neck
Total surface area accounting for 9% (4.5% front and 4.5% back).
Rule of Nines: Arms
Each arm accounts for 9% total (4.5% front and 4.5% back).
Rule of Nines: Legs
Each leg accounts for 18% total (9% front and 9% back).
Rule of Nines: Torso / Trunk
The front (chest and abdomen) accounts for 18% and the back accounts for 18% (9% upper and 9% lower).
Rule of Nines: Perineum
The anatomical area accounting for 1% of the total body surface area.
