Surveyor
An instrument used to determine relative parallelism of two or more tooth surfaces or parts of a cast in dental arches.
Primary impression
The initial impression taken to create a diagnostic cast.
Secondary impression
An impression taken after mouth preparation to create a master cast.
Path of insertion
The angle by which the rigid part of a removable partial denture (RPD) is set over the abutments until the denture base contacts the tissues.
Undercut gauge
A tool used to measure the extent of undercut for clasp retention, typically available in sizes of 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03 inches.
Guiding planes
The parallel surfaces on proximal teeth that the proximal plate of the RPD fits against to guide insertion and removal.
Tripoding
The process of recording the final tilt of a diagnostic cast for accurate repositioning during the fabrication of a master cast.
Flasking
The process of enclosing the master cast with material to facilitate the removal of the casting after it hardens.
Analyzing rod
A rigid, cylindrical metal tool used to select the path of insertion and determine relative parallelism of proximal surfaces.
Carbon marker
A tool used to mark the survey line on a cast, indicating maximum height of contour.
