A political union of the colonies.

Manifest Destiny

The belief that the USA was destined, by God, to control North America.

Political Deadlock

Government decisions cannot be made because each side blocks the other from advancing any agenda.

Corn Laws

Lower duty on wheat/grain coming from British colonies, repealed in 1846 resulting in a drop in CDN exports

Fenians

Irish brotherhood in USA that promoted Irish liberation from British control. They wanted to capture BNA colonies in exchange for Ireland in a ransom.

Annexation

Incorporation of foreign territory into one’s own.

Recession

Period of economic decline

Reciprocity Treaty

Free trade on timber, grain, coal, livestock and fish until 1866 when Britain cancelled it.
