Basic Speed Limit (Primary Highway outside Urban Areas)
100km/h unless otherwise posted.
Backing Passenger Vehicle to the Left
The driver should look over the left shoulder with occasional glances to the front.
Green Right-Turn Arrow with Red Main Light
A driver may proceed when safe, without stopping, in the direction of the arrow.
Demerit Suspension (Fully Licensed Driver)
Suspension occurs when a driver accumulates 15 points.
Single Solid White Line
Indicates that lane changing is not permitted between driving lanes.
Parking Lane (Primary Highway)
The portion of a primary highway between the edge of the roadway to the right of the direction of traffic and the nearest solid white line.
Shoulder Checking
Glancing towards the blind spot in the direction the driver intends to move.
Illuminated Red X (Lane Control)
Indicates that travel is not permitted in that specific lane.
Parental Consent Withdrawal
A parent can withdraw consent for a person under 18 provided they are not self-supporting or married.
Over-driving Headlights
Travelling at a speed which would not permit the driver to see an object in time to stop.
Two-Second Rule
Used to judge a safe following distance; it is accurate at any speed.
Flashing Red Traffic Light
The driver must stop and proceed only when it is safe to do so.
Passenger Restraint Responsibility
In Alberta, the driver must ensure all passengers under 16 years of age are properly restrained.
Parallel Parking Curb Distance
The vehicle’s wheels closest to the curb must be within a maximum of 50cm from the curb.
GDL Probationary Class 5 Duration
A person must serve a minimum of 2 years as a probationary driver.
Collision Reporting Threshold
Collisions must be reported to police if there are injuries, deaths, or combined damage to property exceeding 1000.
Skid Recovery
The driver should steer in the direction they want the front of the vehicle to go.
Slow-Moving Vehicle Sign
Must be displayed on the rear of any vehicle traveling at speeds less than 40km/h.
Weave Zone
A highway area where entrance and exit lanes are close together, requiring exiting vehicles to drive between accelerating entering vehicles.
Threshold Braking
Applying even braking force just before the wheels lock and easing off slightly if they do lock (in vehicles without anti-lock brakes).
Emergency Vehicle Approach
Drivers must drive as close as possible to the right curb or edge of the road and stop.
GDL Class 7 Night Driving Restriction
Learners are not permitted to drive between the hours of Midnight and 5:00A.M..
Flashing Yellow Traffic Light
Indicates that the driver should proceed with caution.
School Zone Hours
Unless otherwise posted: 8:00A.M. to 9:30A.M., 11:30A.M. to 1:30P.M., and 3:00P.M. to 4:30P.M..
Uphill Parking with a Curb
The front wheels should be turned to the left.
Scanning Distance (Urban areas)
Drivers should scan the road approximately 12 to 15 seconds ahead.
Playground Zone Hours
In effect from 8:30A.M. to 1 hour after sunset.
Stop Sign Parking Distance
A driver can legally park no closer than 5m to a Stop sign.
Headlight Dimming Distance (Following)
Headlights must be dimmed when approaching another vehicle from behind within 150m.
GDL Class 7 Demerit Suspension
Suspension occurs when a learner accumulates 8 demerits.
Uncontrolled Intersection
An intersection that has no traffic control signal lights or traffic signs.
Nighttime Definition
The period beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before the following sunrise.
Railway Crossing Stop distance
Stop at least 5m from the nearest rail when lights and bells are activated.
Angle Parking Curb Distance
The vehicle’s front wheel must be within a maximum of 50cm from the curb.
Fire Hydrant Parking Distance
A vehicle must be parked at a minimum distance of 5m from a fire hydrant.
