triangular slave trade

European ships, primarily in the 18th century, transported slaves from Africa to Caribbean island, molasses from the Caribbean to Europe, and trade goods from Europe to Asia

sharecropper

person who works fields rented from a landowner and pays the rent by turning over to the landowner a share of the crops

blockbusting

real estate agents convinced white homeowners living near a black area to sell their houses at low prices, by making them fear that black families would soon move around them and lower the property values

redlining

process by financial institutions where they draw red lines on a map and refuse to lend money to people who want to purchase or improve property within red lines

apartheid

the legal separation of races into different geographic areas

partition

process of dividing a territory or state into seperate parts, often creating new political borders due to ethnic religious or political conflicts

pretext

a false or superficial reason given to justify and action

balkanized

a small geographic area that could not be successfully organized into stable countries because it inhabited by many ethnicities with conflicts with each other
