New cards

What is an individual part of?

A species

2
New cards

What is a habitat?

The natural home where a species lives in

3
New cards

What is a population?

A group of organisms in one species living in the same area at the same time

4
New cards

Define community

A group of species (two or more populations of organisms) interacting within the same habitat

5
New cards

What is interdependence?

Organisms depend on each other for survival

6
New cards

Define ecosystem

The interaction of a community with abiotic (non living) parents of the environment

7
New cards

What are examples of abiotic factors?

Temperature, light, water, salinity, ocean currents

8
New cards

Define the environment

It consists of all the conditions that surround any living organism, including biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors and physical surroundings

9
New cards

What is biomass?

The mass of living material

10
New cards

What is a producer?

Plants and algae - organisms which photosynthesise

11
New cards

What is a primary consumer?

Herbivores since they eat producers

12
New cards

What is a secondary consumer?

Carnivores since they eat primary consumers

13
New cards

What is a tertiary consumer?

A carnivore, since they eat secondary consumers

14
New cards

What is the apex predator?

A carnivore which lives at the top of the food chain

15
New cards

How do producers get their energy?

They photosynthesise (water+carbon dioxide=glucose+oxygen)

16
New cards

What does a plant do when it has photosynthesised?

Respirates with the products it has just produced (glucose+oxygen=water+carbon dioxide) - other molecules needed for the plant are made, such as cellulose, proteins, lipids and for energy storage. This causes the plant to grow

17
New cards

How do consumers get their energy?

By eating producers and other consumers

18
New cards

How does eating plants give consumers energy?

Some of the nutrients and energy the producer contained is passed onto the consumer
