2 different zones underground water occurs in?
Vadose zone (unsaturated) and Saturated Zone
Vadose Zone
Also called the unsaturated zone immediately underlies the land surface, contains both water and air
Saturated Zone
Lies beneath the Vadose zone. interconnected openings are full of water
Groundwater
Water stored in the saturated zone
Water Table
Top of saturated zone. Groundwater flows in the direction the table is sloping
Aquifer
body of saturated rock or sediment that is capable of transmitting useful quantities of water to wells or springs
Confing Rock Units
form the boundaries of aquifers. Transmit water very slowly to not at all. Clay, shale, granite
Unconfined Aquifer
body of saturated sediment or rock not overlain by a confining unit
Confined Aquifer
a layer confines the water in a area
Potentiometric Surface
A pipe that is lowered down to tap a well causing the water to rise up
Hydraulic Head
in an aquifer is the elevation to which water rises in a cased well tapping that point
Hydraulic Gradient
between two points in an aquifer is the difference in hydraulic head divide by the distance between the points
Hydraulic Conductivity
quantifies the ability of rock or sediment to transmit groundwater
Effective Porosity
the % of the total volume of rock or sediment that consists of interconnected openings.
Flow Nets
Graphically illustrate groundwater movement in maps or cross sections
Flow net lines
Hydraulic Head Contours and Flow Lines
Hydraulic Head Contours
Connect points with equal hydraulic head
Flow Lines
depict pathways followed by groundwater moving through an aquifer
Particle Volume
Volume of the solid particles in the sample
Total Volume
particle volume plus the volume of pores/openings in the sample
Capillary Water
amount of water trapped between the particles
Concentration Contour
Connects points of equal concentration
Solute
something dissolved in groundwater
Contaminate Plume
The enclave of contaminated groundwater depicted by concentration contours
Hydrogeologist
a geologist who studies groundwater
