Methods
A section in research that provides sufficient detail for replication.
Overview of the Study
A summary provided at the beginning of the Methods section.
Random Assignment
A procedure in which participants are randomly assigned to different conditions.
$1 Condition
A condition in which participants performed tasks for $1, then were paid to describe the experience positively.
$20 Condition
A condition where participants were paid $20 to provide a similar positive account of the tasks.
Control Condition
A group of participants engaging in tasks without any additional incentives.
Reliability
The consistency of a measure; it indicates the extent to which an experiment can be replicated.
Validity
The extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure.
Demand Characteristics
Cues that can inform participants of the purpose of a study and potentially influence their behavior.
Hypothesis
A testable prediction about the relationship between two or more variables.
Discussion
A section where researchers summarize what they learned, limitations, implications, and future research.
Vigorous Writing
Writing that is succinct, concise, and free of unnecessary words.
Omit Needless Words
A principle emphasizing that all words used should contribute meaningfully to the text.
Bias in Language
The use of language that may consciously or unconsciously perpetuate stereotypes or discrimination.
Theoretical Issues
Key concepts or variables being investigated in a study.
Participant Feedback
Information provided by subjects regarding their experiences during the study.
