Joe being both 'the worker and boss' shows his desire for money as he has gone up the social ladder but not always been at the top, he is a product of capitalism, still thinks as tho he may lose his life which has been spent working his way up a system, a rat race. Theme of money

We can also link this to Joe's pragmatic attitude and the theme of ideology joe represents capitalism.
