Antibacterial Agents
Substances that inhibit bacterial growth or kill bacteria.
Bactericidal
Agents that kill bacteria.
Bacteriostatic
Agents that inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria.
Phagocytosis
The process by which certain cells absorb and eliminate bacteria.
Antibiotics of broad spectrum
Drugs effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Penicillins
A group of antibiotics that are bactericidal and interfere with bacterial cell wall synthesis.
First generation penicillins
Effective against Gram-positive bacteria, e.g., Penicillin G and V.
Second generation penicillins
Effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including examples like Ampicillin.
Third generation penicillins
Penicillins with a broader spectrum, effective against pseudomonas and Proteus vulgaris.
Cefalosporins
A class of antibiotics structurally similar to penicillins that are bactericidal.
Aminoglycosides
Broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotics that inhibit bacterial protein synthesis.
Tetracyclines
Broad-spectrum antibiotics effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, bacteriostatic in nature.
Sulfonamides
Antibiotics effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, known for developing bacterial resistance.
Antifungal Drugs
Medications used to treat infections caused by fungi.
Antiviral Drugs
Medicines that inhibit the replication of viruses.
Antihelmintics
Drugs used to treat infections caused by parasitic worms.
Antiprotozoal Drugs
Medications used to treat infections caused by protozoa.
