S 162.1 (1) Everyone who knowingly publishes, distributes, transmits, sells, makes available/advertizes an intimate image of a person knowing that the person depicted in the image did not give their consent to that conduct/being reckless as to whether/not that person gave their consent to that conduct

Rates of sexual victimization

• 1/8 girls, 1/12 boys

• 1/3 women, 1/6 men

• Stats Can finds self-reported sexual assault rates steady over the last 10 years (decreased since the 90s, but rose again after Me Too)

COVID and sexual violence

Increased numerous societal-level risk factors for violence:

• Economic insecurity

• Unrest & instability

• Quarantine & isolation

• Inability to escape

• Reduced access to support systems & hospitals

All types of violence increase, including sexual offending (specifically intra-familial offending)

Scope of sexual violence

Some groups are more at risk:

• Disabled persons

• Sex workers

• Children in foster care

• LGBTQ

• Homeless persons

• Indigenous Peoples

• Young women (15-24 in police-reported, 25-34 in self-reported)
