Heart of Atlanta Motel vs. US
Ruled that congress could regulate private businesses under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. In this case, the motel wasn’t allowed to deny service to people because of their race.
New Jersey vs. TLO
Court ruled that a school can search a student’s property since they are on school grounds
New York Times vs. US
Nixon tried preventing the NY Times from publishing an embarassing story about the Vietnam war. The court ruled that they could publish it and freedom of press rights were expanded.
Bush vs. Gore
A close 2000s presidential election causing a recount in Florida. The recount was deemed unconstitutional since it was thought to not give equal weight to each vote.
Tinker vs. Des Moines
Students wore black armbands to protest the Vietnam war. The students were suspended but this was unconstitutional since they were protected by free speech as long as it didn’t interfere with the education.
US vs. Nixon
Nixon claimed the watergate recordings were confidential, but Supreme Court ruled that they needed to be turned over since executive privilege can’t interfere with due process of law.
