Oxytocin
A hormone classified as a uterine stimulant, oxytocic, and uterotonic.
Mechanism of Action of Oxytocin
Selectively stimulates the smooth musculature of the uterus, increasing muscle tone and the frequency and strength of contractions.
Indications for Oxytocin
Used for post-partum hemorrhage and normal postpartum management after the delivery of the placenta.
Contraindications for Oxytocin
Should not be administered to patients who have had uterine or cervical surgery.
Dosage for Oxytocin IV infusion
20 - 30 Units in 1000 ml NS at 250 ml/hr, titrated to uterine response and severity of bleeding.
Optional IM dosage for Oxytocin
10 Units IM.
Side effects in the mother from Oxytocin
Hypotension, dysrhythmias, tachycardia, seizures, coma, nausea/vomiting, and potential ADH effects leading to water retention and vasoconstriction at higher doses.
Side effects in the fetus from Oxytocin
Hypoxia, asphyxia, arrhythmias, and intracranial bleeding.
Precaution when administering Oxytocin
May cause placental retention if given before delivery of the placenta.
