Tissue
A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function.
Epithelial Tissue
A tissue type that covers body surfaces, lines organs and cavities, and forms glands.
Avascular
A key characteristic of epithelial tissue meaning it contains no blood vessels.
Basement membrane
The structure to which epithelial tissue is attached.
Squamous
Flat-shaped epithelial cells found in the lungs that function in diffusion.
Cuboidal
Cube-shaped epithelial cells found in kidney tubules that function in secretion.
Columnar
Tall epithelial cells found in the intestines that function in absorption.
Connective Tissue
The most abundant tissue type that supports, binds, protects, and connects body structures.
Extracellular matrix
The abundant material in connective tissue in which cells are spread out.
Bone
A type of connective tissue used for support and protection, such as the skull and femur.
Cartilage
A type of connective tissue that provides cushioning in the nose, ears, and joints.
Blood
A liquid connective tissue that transports oxygen and nutrients.
Adipose
A type of connective tissue used for energy storage, commonly known as body fat.
Tendon
A connective structure that connects muscle to bone.
Ligament
A connective structure that connects bone to bone.
Muscle Tissue
Specialized tissue that contracts to produce movement, posture, and heat production.
Skeletal Muscle
Striated muscle attached to bones that is under voluntary control.
Cardiac Muscle
Striated muscle found only in the heart wall that is under involuntary control.
Smooth Muscle
Non-striated muscle that lines hollow organs like the stomach and bladder, and is under involuntary control.
Nervous Tissue
Tissue that receives, processes, and transmits information throughout the body.
Neurons
The functional cells of nervous tissue that transmit electrical impulses.
Dendrites
The parts of a neuron that receive signals.
Axon
The part of a neuron that carries signals away from the cell body.
Neuroglia (Glial Cells)
Cells that support, protect, and nourish neurons.
ECMN
The mnemonic for the four major tissue types: Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nervous.
