Transpiration
The process of water loss from leaves through evaporation, which helps pull water up from the roots.
Xylem
The tissue in plants responsible for the transport of water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant.
Phloem
The vascular tissue in plants that transports sugars and nutrients produced by photosynthesis, from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
Mycorrhizae
Symbiotic relationships between fungi and plant roots that increase surface area for nutrient and water absorption.
Auxin
A plant hormone that promotes cell expansion, affects growth direction, and inhibits leaf abscission.
C4 photosynthesis
A type of photosynthesis that involves an extra step to efficiently capture CO2, especially in hot and dry conditions.
CAM plants
Plants that open their stomata at night to collect CO2, reducing water loss during the hot daytime.
Photoperiodism
The physiological reaction of plants to the length of day and night, affecting flowering and growth.
Gravitropism
The directional growth of plants in response to gravity, with roots exhibiting positive gravitropism and stems negative gravitropism.
Tropism
Directional growth of a plant in response to environmental stimuli such as light (phototropism) and touch (thigmotropism).
