Complete formula
A liquid that supplies all nutrients needed, such as Ensure or Boost.
Intact formula
Contains whole proteins.
Hydrolyzed formula
Contains broken proteins.
Tube feeding
Delivering nutrients through a tube into the stomach or intestine.
Osmolality
The amount of active solutes in a solution.
Isotonic formula
Has the same concentration as blood.
Hypotonic formula
Less concentrated than blood, can cause cells to swell.
Hypertonic formula
More concentrated than blood, can cause cells to shrink.
Gastric residual
Formula left in the stomach from a previous feeding.
Bolus feeding
Delivering large volumes of nutrients quickly over a short timeframe.
Continuous feeding
Slow delivery of nutrients over 8-24 hours.
PKU
Genetic inability to break down the amino acid phenylalanine.
Galactosemia
Genetic inability to convert galactose into glucose.
Intravenous
Feeding through a vein.
TPN
Total parenteral nutrition, providing 2500 calories/day.
Phlebitis
Inflammation of the vein caused by IV feeding.
Refeeding syndrome
Rapid increase in metabolism due to nutrients leading to electrolyte shifts.
Celiac disease
Allergy to gluten causing malabsorption.
Ileostomy
Removal of the entire colon, rectum, and anus.
Atherosclerosis
Build-up of fats in blood vessels leading to decreased blood flow.
Diabetes mellitus
A disease characterized by high blood sugar due to insulin issues.
Anemia
A condition marked by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin.
DNR
Do not resuscitate; a directive indicating a person does not want resuscitation efforts.
