TERM
Cervical Vertebrae
DEFINITION
The first seven bones of the vertebral column. The First 7 bones labeled 1-7 from top to bottom. Includes the Axis and the Atlas. The only Vertebrae to possess Transverse Foramina.

TERM
Thoracic Vertebrae
DEFINITION
The 12 vertebrae of the Thoracic Region. The only Vertbrae to possess Costal Facets to articulate with rib bones.

Lumbar Vertebrae
The 5 bones of the more lower part of the Vertebrae. Has the largest disk size.

Vertebral Body
(Also known as a Centrum) Of the Vertebrae. The main body or disk.

Vetebral Arch
Of the Vertebrae. The arch made by the Pedicle and the Lamina of the bone.

Pedicle
Of the Vertebrae. The supporting column or stalk projecting off the body.

Lamina
Of the Vertebrae. The Upper part of the vertebral arch

Vertebral Foramen
Of the Vertebrae. The canal through which spinal cord passes

Intervertebral Foramen
Openings formed by the pedicles of adjacent vertebrae. Allows passage of spinal nerves and vessels.

Transverse Process
Of the VertebraeThe two lateral projections from the vertebral arch

Spinous Process
of the Vertebrae. A sharp, slender projection off the posterior part of the bone.

Transverse Foramen
Specific to the Cervical Vertebrae. Allows passage of the vertebral artery, vein, and nerve

Costal Facets
gliding joints where ribs meet thoracic vertebrae

Atlas
The First Vertebrae found in the Cervical Vertebrae. (C1) Is the bone which the skull rests on. Is the only disk without a body. (Latin for the Titan god which holds up the world.)

Axis
The Second Vertebrae found in the Cervical Vertebrae. The bone that the Atlas rests on. Allows the skull to rotate laterally.

Dens
Of the Axis. Also known as the Odontoid Process. The joint that allows the Atlas to rotate. Forms the Atlantoaxial joint.

Intervetebral Discs
Made from Fibrocartilage. A cartilage disc between each vertebrae. They absorb shock and permit movements of vertebral column. Composed of the nucleus pulposus and the annulus fibrosus.
Annulus Latin meants round. Annulus Fibrosis made from collagen and elastic fibers coats the outside and contains a large amount of collagen fibers. Nucleus Pulposus is the squishy inside.
A disc Hernates is when the annuls fibrosis breaks and spills the nucleus pulposus.

Sacral Vertebrae
The set of 5 bones fused into one. A more inferior part of the Vertebrae.

Median Sacral Crest
Of the Sacrum. The ridge formed by the fused spinous processes of the sacral vertebrae.

Coccygeal Vertebrae
Also called the "tailbone". A small structure projecting off the distal end of the Sacrum.

Sacral Formina
Of the Sacrum. Four pairs of openings found on the sacrum that allow passages for nerves.

Sternum
The convergence point of the ribs. Consists of 3 parts, the Manubreum, the Body, and the Xiphoid Process.

Rib
Also known as a costal bone. Make up the bulk

Head
Of the Rib. The end of the rib that articulates with the Costal facets of the Thoracic vertebrae.

Neck
Of the Rib. The part that lies between the head and the Rib Tubercle.

Body
The long part of the rib.

Rib Tubercle
Of the Rib. small rounded process of rib that articulates with transverse process of the thoracic vertebrae

Costal Groove
Of the Rib. A groove on the inferior side of the rib shaft
