horizontal row = period
tells u number of electron shell present
All elements in period have same number of shells, but diff numbers of electrons that fill those shells
eg:
•Determine the number of electron shells found in the following elements:
•Carbon
•Carbon is found in period 2, and so has 2 electron shells
Groups
vertical column
•The group number tells you the number of valence electrons in the element.
•Hydrogen (Group 1) has 1 VE, carbon (group 14) has 4 VE, phosphorus (group 15) has 5 valence electrons, and so on.
