Cell Membrane
A flexible, dynamic structure which allows components of the cell to move and interact
Tight Junctions
Integral proteins on adjacent cells fuse to form an impermeable junction that encircles who cell
Prevent fluids and molecules from moving between cells
Desmosomes
Rivet-like cell junction formed when linker proteins (cadherins) of neighboring cells interlock like the teeth of a zipper
Gap Junction
Transmembrane proteins (connexons) from tunnels that allow small molecules to pass from cell to cell
Allows electrical signals to be passed quickly from one cell to next cell
Used in cardiac and smooth muscles cells
Passive Transport
No energy is required (Diffusion, Osmosis, Facilitated Diffusion)
Active Transport
Energy (ATP) is required. (Primary and secondary active transport)
