Cell Membrane

A flexible, dynamic structure which allows components of the cell to move and interact

Tight Junctions

• Integral proteins on adjacent cells fuse to form an impermeable junction that encircles who cell

• Prevent fluids and molecules from moving between cells

Desmosomes

• Rivet-like cell junction formed when linker proteins (cadherins) of neighboring cells interlock like the teeth of a zipper

Gap Junction

• Transmembrane proteins (connexons) from tunnels that allow small molecules to pass from cell to cell

• Allows electrical signals to be passed quickly from one cell to next cell

• Used in cardiac and smooth muscles cells

Passive Transport

No energy is required (Diffusion, Osmosis, Facilitated Diffusion)

Active Transport

Energy (ATP) is required. (Primary and secondary active transport)
