Atom
The fundamental “building block” of a substance; the smallest particle of an element.
Element
A substance composed entirely of the same type of atom.
Nucleus
The dense center of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
Isotope
Atoms of the same element that possess different numbers of neutrons.
Valence Electrons
The electrons located in the outermost energy level of an atom, responsible for chemical interactions.
Covalent Bond
A bond formed when atoms are held together by the sharing of electrons.
Ionic Bond
A bond formed by the attraction between oppositely charged ions created through electron transfer.
Ion
An atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons, resulting in as net positive or negative charged.
Periodic Table
A chart organizing all known atoms based on their properties and atomic structure.
