Instruction Permit
The first step in Missouri’s Graduated Driver License Program for 15-year-old drivers, allowing supervised driving with a licensed adult.
Intermediate License (Class F)
The second step in the GDL program for drivers aged 16 to 18, providing certain restricted driving privileges.
Full Driver License (Class F)
The basic operator license for drivers at least 18 years of age, required for operating motor vehicles that do not require specialized classes.
For-Hire License (Class E)
A license required for individuals who receive pay for transporting 14 or fewer passengers, transport property for pay, or operate a freight vehicle weighing 26,000pounds or less.
Nondriver Identification Card (Class ND)
A photo ID issued for identification purposes only, which expires on the date of birth in the sixth year after application (non-expiring for those age 70 or older).
REAL ID-compliant
A driver license or ID card that meets federal security standards for accessing federal facilities and boarding domestic flights.
Graduated Driver License (GDL) Law
A law requiring first-time drivers under 18 to complete an instruction permit period and an intermediate license period before obtaining a full license.
Acuity
The sharpness of vision, which must be at least 20/40 with either or both eyes to meet standard Missouri licensing requirements.
Peripheral Vision
Side vision, which must be at least 55∘ in each eye or 85∘ in one eye for a Missouri driver license.
Move Over Law
A regulation requiring motorists approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights to change lanes into a non-adjacent lane or slow down if a lane change is unsafe.
The No-Zone
Blind spots around large trucks and buses located at the front, rear, and both sides where the driver cannot see other vehicles.
Hydroplaning
A condition where tires lose contact with the road and ride on a film of water, which can occur at speeds over 35mph.
Three Second Rule
A method used to maintain a safe following distance by ensuring it takes at least three seconds to reach a fixed object after the vehicle ahead has passed it.
Highway Hypnosis
A state of sleepiness or unawareness caused by the monotony of a long drive, which can be avoided by moving the eyes across traffic and signs.
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)
The measure of the amount of alcohol in a person's system; the legal limit for adults in Missouri is less than 0.08%.
Abuse and Lose Law
Statutes that allow the state to take away the driver license of someone under 21 for alcohol or drug-related offenses, or someone over 21 for drug-related offenses while driving.
Ignition Interlock Device (IID)
A mechanical unit connected to a vehicle's ignition that prevents starting if it detects a specific concentration of alcohol in the driver's breath.
Minor in Possession (MIP)
A crime involving a person under 21 purchasing, attempting to purchase, or possessing intoxicating liquor.
The Point System
A system where the Department of Revenue adds points to a driving record for traffic violations; 8 points within 18months results in a suspension.
Financial Responsibility
The legal requirement for vehicle owners to maintain liability insurance to cover injuries or property damage caused to others.
SR-22 Filing
An insurance form filed with the Driver License Bureau as proof of future financial responsibility, often required following a DWI or point-based suspension.
Title
A legal document that serves as proof of ownership for a motor vehicle.
FACT (Failure to Appear in Court)
A status resulting in immediate license suspension if a driver fails to pay a traffic fine or appear in court within 30days of notification.
Steer It and Clear It
A state law requiring motorists involved in minor, non-injury crashes to move their vehicles off the roadway to avoid traffic pileups.
Penny Test
A simple method to check tire tread depth using a coin; tread is considered safe if it covers part of Lincoln's head (approximately 2/32 of an inch).
Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)
A traffic design where vehicles briefly travel on the left side of the roadway to facilitate easier left-hand turns onto highway ramps.
Truck Apron
A paved area on the inside of a roundabout designed for the rear wheels of large trucks to use when turning.
J-Turn
An alternative intersection on four-lane highways where drivers turn right, merge left, and then make a left turn into the opposing lanes.
DHH Notation
A 'Deaf or Hard of Hearing' indicator placed on a license to assist emergency personnel in communicating with the driver.
Electric Bicycle Class 3
A bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when pedaling and ceases when the bicycle reaches 28mph.
