Keratitis
form of viral eye infection; herpetic keratitis → inflammation of the cornea caused by herpes simplex infection in eye
Treatment: antiviral meds like acyclovir and trifluridine are used to treat herpes keratitis
Unresolved conjunctivitis can lead to keratitis
Bacterial keratitis also exists
Fungal keratitis caused by fergillus, aspergillus (both found in envrionment), and candida (found in normal human microbiome) - fungi have hard time getting in eye because they cannot pentrate the intact corneal epithelium
Chicken Pox + Shingles
Viral infections of the skin
Chickenpox is a childhood disease caused by varicella zoster virus -VZV (linear dsDNA & member of Herpesviridae family) that presents an itchy rash over the upper body
Initial exposure to virus causes chickenpox and later in life, virus can emerge by traveling back down the nerve fibers to skin because even after disease resolves the viral DNA takes refuge in cluster of nerve cells and dorsal root ganglia and then causes the painful disease shingles (herpes zoster)
Tuberculosis
airborne
pharyngitis
strep throat
