Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture where you can see different parts, so not evenly mixed.
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that looks the same throughout, evenly mixed
Solution
A homogeneous mixture where one substance is dissolved in another.
Solute
The substance that gets dissolved.
Solvent
The substance that does the dissolving.
Dilute
A solution with a small amount of solute.
Concentrated
A solution with a large amount of solute
Saturated
A solution that can’t dissolve any more solute
Unsaturated
A solution that can still dissolve more solute.
Miscible
Liquids that mix completely together.
Immiscible
Liquids that do not mix (like oil and water).
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve in another.
Supersaturated
A solution that holds more solute than it normally can.
Factors that affect solubility
Temperature – Higher temperatures usually increase solubility.
Pressure – Affects gases (higher pressure = more dissolved).
Surface area/stirring – Smaller pieces and stirring help dissolve faster.
