What is a lever?
A rigid bar or object that moves around a fulcrum with two forces applied on it
What is the load in a lever?
The weight/resistance to be moved e.g. a body part, an object, or resistance met
What is the effort in a lever?
The source of energy that works to move the load e.g. muscles in the body
What is a fulcrum of a lever?
A fixed point of pivot. E.g. a joint in the body
What is mechanical disadvantage?
When a levers load is larger than its effort
What is mechanical advantage?
Allows a large load to be moved with a relatively small effort
What is a first class lever?
A mechanism where the fulcrum is located between the effort and the load
What is a second class lever?
A mechanism where the load is located between the fulcrum and the effort
What is a third class lever?
A mechanism where the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load
Give one example of a third class lever in sport
A bicep curl, kicking a football, swinging a racket, throwing a ball, hamstring curl
Give an example of a second class lever in sport
Plantar flexion of the ankle, push up
give an example of a first class lever in sport
Heading in football, tricep extensions, javelin throw, rowing
