Irony
When what happens is different from what is expected, or when someone says the opposite of what they mean.
Allusion
A reference to a famous person, place, event, book, or story.
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates a sound (such as buzz, bang, or crash).
Monologue
A long speech given by one character.
Chorus
In a play, a group or speaker that comments on the events and helps explain the story.
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of rhyming words in a poem, shown with letters (ABAB, AABB, etc.).
Meter
The rhythm of a poem created by patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Stanza
A group of lines in a poem, similar to a paragraph in writing.
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words (for example, "the rain in Spain").
