Erythropoiesis
The formation of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the body.
Hypoxia
A condition in which there is a deficiency of oxygen in the tissues.
Erythropoietin (EPO)
A hormone produced by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells in response to low oxygen levels.
Hemocytoblast
A stem cell that can differentiate into any type of blood cell, including erythrocytes.
Macrophages
Large immune cells that engulf and digest dying or dead cells, including old red blood cells.
Bilirubin
A yellow pigment formed from the breakdown of heme in red blood cells; recycled by the liver.
Jaundice
A yellowing of the skin and eyes due to the accumulation of bilirubin in the body.
Iron-deficiency anemia
A type of anemia caused by insufficient iron, leading to small and pale red blood cells.
Sickle-cell anemia
A genetic disorder that causes red blood cells to become crescent-shaped, leading to various health issues.
Polycythemia
A condition characterized by an excess of red blood cells, increasing blood viscosity.
