AVPU
A mnemonic used to assess a patient's level of consciousness: Alert, Verbal response, Pain response, Unresponsive.
DCAP-BTLS
A mnemonic for assessing injuries: Deformities, Contusions, Abrasions, Punctures/penetrations, Burns, Tenderness, Lacerations, Swelling.
SAMPLE
A mnemonic to gather patient history: Signs and Symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Pertinent past medical history, Last oral intake, Events leading up to the injury/illness.
OPQRST
A mnemonic used to evaluate pain: Onset, Provocation/Palliation, Quality, Region/Radiation, Severity, Timing.
Primary Survey
The initial assessment of a patient to identify life threats, involving steps such as Scene Size-up and Initial Assessment.
Scene Size-up
The first step in the primary survey to ensure safety, assess the mechanism of injury/nature of illness, number of patients, and need for additional help.
Secondary Survey
A thorough examination process that includes focused history, physical exam, and reassessment after the primary survey.
Capillary Refill
A test to evaluate circulatory system perfusion; normally should return to color within 2 seconds when pressure is applied.
Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
A scoring system to assess the level of consciousness by evaluating eye, verbal, and motor responses.
PERRL
An acronym used in assessing pupils: Pupils Equal, Round, React to Light.
