Where new laws proposed are set out Opened for public debate and consultation
White paper
Where laws proposed are set out formally
First reading
Aims are announced and a vote is taken
Second Reading
Aims debated and another vote taken
Committee stage
Where a selected group is asked to study the bill more closely and look into issues and suggest amendments
Report stage
Committee read out what they found and vote is made on the amendments proposed
Third reading
Final vote taken on the bill
Royal Assent
The monarch gives their approval just a formality
